The film rides on characters and their behaviours rather than relying on a structured and judgemental plot. The brothers often engage in fights with each other, and only Bonny and Franky initially qualify the audience poll for likeability. The house is run in chaos with the eldest Saji living an alcoholic life leaching on his Tamilian labourer friend, Bonny the mute having almost abandoned the house, Bobby living the life of a good-for-nothing careless daydreamer, and the boarding school going Franky seeming to be the only one with sense and sensibility. Their mother (the biological mother of the other 3 and the step mother of the Saji) had left the house long back to join church work. Saji, Bonny, Bobby, and Franky are four brothers whose family tree is complicated to the eyes of an average person. Madhu C Narayanan’s Kumbalangi Nightsmanages that fete while becoming perhaps the best feel good movie of the year so far. Rare are the instances in Malayalam cinema where the members of a dysfunctional family end up becoming your likeable protagonists. And all my doubts vanished into thin air, the moment I stepped into the recording studio and watched those scenes! Fahadh Faasil is an actor, who wouldn’t opt for a character for no reason! And in ‘Pushpa: The Rise’ he has a lot of space to explore as an actor. When Fahadh signed the film, I was curious to know what attracted him. The director has allowed the protagonist and antagonist to have a really good exchange. But in ‘Pushpa: The Rise’ it is quite different. “I was awed by Allu Arjun’s performance as well! Mostly in Allu Arjun’s movies, he gets to play this persona, who stricks back at all those who come his way. Jis Joy also adds that what makes Allu Arjun’s character Pushpa more powerful is the antagonist - Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat IPS, played by Fahadh Faasil.
